Evanston's alley makeover season rolls out
The City’s Public Works Agency has announced its 2024 alley maintenance schedule. Starting in the spring every year, Evanston's more than 300 unpaved alleys are periodically graded by the City.
Why grade the alleys? This work is done to eliminate potholes and ruts caused by vehicles, weather, and other factors.
Evanston Sidewalks Get $400K Boost from Cook County
The Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways has awarded the City a $400,000 grant as part of its Invest in Cook initiative, funding our Sidewalk Improvement Program. This program enhances pedestrian safety and accessibility in Evanston. We're thankful for Cook County's ongoing support, including two prior $500,000 grants for sidewalk improvements along both Oakton Street and Main Street.
A Message from Evanston Health Department:
Measles cases in nearby Chicago
In the past week, there have been at least eight measles cases identified in Chicago, seven of which are related to a migrant shelter. The U.S. has seen an increase in cases this year, with 45 cases identified nationwide between January 1 and March 7, compared to 58 total cases in 2023.
What is Measles? Measles is a highly contagious virus that causes a rash and high fever. It is spread through the air as well as respiratory droplets. Young children, pregnant people, and those with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of complications, but measles can be a serious disease for a person of any age. Complications include hospitalization, pneumonia, and brain damage.
At this time, there are no known measles cases in Evanston, but we are asking all residents to make sure they are up-to-date on their measles vaccines. Most people should have two vaccine doses (commonly documented as MMR or MMRV on an immunization record). If you cannot locate your record, call your doctor or look up your record in the state immunization registry. If you are unsure if you are up-to-date with the current recommendations, call your healthcare provider to get a dose of MMR as soon as possible.
