Traffic Stop Leads to a UUW Charge
EVANSTON, IL - On February 24, 2024, at approximately 8:15 p.m., Evanston Police Detectives were in the area of the 1600 block of Howard Street when they observed a blue Chevrolet Cruze driving westbound without headlights when required. The detectives then stopped the Cruze for the traffic violation.
Detectives made contact with the driver, Navardo Wellington, and the passenger, who was the registered owner. When the detectives were speaking to Wellington and the passenger, the passenger admitted that there was a loaded handgun on the floorboard of the vehicle. The detectives asked Wellington and the passenger to get out of the vehicle. The detectives then recovered a loaded and uncased Springfield XDS 9 mm from the floorboard. The handgun was loaded with nine rounds, but none were in the chamber. Wellington admitted to detectives that he was in possession of the handgun. Wellington was placed under arrest and transported to the station. The Cruze was parked and the passenger was released at the scene.
Once in the station, the detectives continued their investigation and interviewed Wellington. Wellington made a post-Miranda admission to possessing the gun. The investigation revealed that Wellington did have a FOID Card but did not have a Concealed Carry License. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the investigation and approved one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Wellington was also cited for driving without headlights when required. Click here for a picture of the gun.
