 Today’s newsletter is a recap of major events reported between October 19th, 2023, and November 2nd, 2023.

Major Incidents
 Unlawful Use of a Weapon: On November 1st, around 4:50 p.m., Evanston Police received a shots fired call in the area of Dodge and Greenwood. Responding officers determined that an unknown subject fired one shot, striking the victim’s vehicle. This incident is currently under investigation.
Motor Vehicle Thefts: Seven vehicles were stolen and another six were attempted. Several of the stolen vehicles had keys or fobs left inside. Most of the steals or attempted steals were from southeast Evanston. Hyundais and Kias continue to be targeted for motor vehicle theft throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.
Residential Burglaries: Two residences were reported burglarized. On October 28th between 9:00 and 10:30 a.m., unknown subjects gained entry to a residence on the 1000 block of Howard through an unsecured door and took clothing. On November 2nd around 1:45 a.m., the victim reported seeing an unknown subject inside the residence. When the victim encountered the subject, he fled through a rear door. Nothing appeared to have been taken.
Garage Burglaries: One garage burglary and two attempted burglaries were reported. On October 26th around 8:00 p.m., the victim saw an unknown subject inside the garage on the 800 block of Dobson. It is unknown if anything was taken. The two attempts occurred on the 2100 block of Seward.
Commercial Burglary: One attempted burglary was reported to a church on the 600 block of Lake Street. Sometime in the overnight hours of October 20th and 21st, unknown subjects attempted to force entry by damaging a door. Entry was not made and nothing was taken.
Vehicle Burglaries: Ten vehicles were burglarized throughout Evanston; eight of the vehicles had their windows broken. Most often, small items like cell phones, purses, or cash are taken from vehicles.
Man with a Gun Calls: Four calls of “man with a gun.” Nothing was located at any of the locations.
Shots Fired Calls: In addition to the incident at Dodge and Greenwood, there were eight “shots fired” calls. On October 22nd at 10:44 p.m., officers responded the area of Hartrey and Foster for a shots fired call. Shell casings were located in the street of the 1900-2000 block of McCormick. No victims or property damage were located. Nothing was found at the seven remaining calls for service.
Catalytic Converter Theft: Three victims reported their cars had their catalytic converters taken.
Package Theft: Three package thefts were reported. All of the packages were left outside of the residences. The Evanston Police Department appreciates the citizens who share their camera footage of these incidents.
Bicycle Theft: Five bike theft incidents were reported. Only one of the bicycles was left unsecured.

Online Non-Emergency Incident Reporting
The Evanston Police Department has launched online non-emergency incident reporting. This self-reporting system is commonly referred to as P2C - Police to Citizen. It efficiently and conveniently allows a citizen to file a report from virtually anywhere with a computer or mobile device. If a citizen does not have access to a computer or mobile device, there is a workstation available for public use in the police department lobby at the Records Bureau window. Stolen Vehicle Tracking
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office announced a “Tracked Vehicle Program” to work with vehicle owners, manufacturers, and dealerships to provide a rapid response to vehicle thefts or carjackings, and more quickly recover the victim’s vehicle. Vehicle owners can visit this link for more information.
Child Safety Seat Installation
In the State of Illinois, all children under the age of eight must be secured in an appropriate child safety seat. Child safety seats include infant seats, convertible seats (Rear-facing for infants and forward-facing for toddlers), and booster seats that are used with the vehicle’s lap and shoulder belt system. Request a child seat installation or inspection through 3-1-1.
Recovered Property
When property is recovered and turned into the police department, every reasonable attempt will be made to identify and return the property to its rightful owner. In many instances property is recovered but never reunited with its owner because there was never a report filed. If you have an item that you have lost or had stolen in Evanston, your first action should be to file a police report.
Even if you have not filed a report, you can still check with the Property Bureau during the Public Operating Hours to see if an item has been turned in. You can contact the Bureau at 847-866-5029. Ongoing Gun Buyback Program
The Gun Buyback Program is an opportunity for Evanston residents to turn in a functioning firearm to the Evanston Police, and in turn, receive $100. A buyback can be set up at any time through the Evanston Police Department (3-1-1 or the non-emergency line). An officer will go to the residence and collect the firearm, and the resident will be given a voucher that can be exchanged for $100 at the City Collector’s Office located in the Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave.
Please do not bring a firearm to the police department without approval from an EPD supervisor.
