Statement on Recent Influx of Hoax Bomb Threats
EVANSTON, IL - In recent weeks, the Evanston Police Department and neighboring law enforcement agencies have been receiving a series of bomb threat calls. Upon thorough investigation, it has been determined that these threats are unsubstantiated hoaxes.
Similar incidents have been reported nationwide, primarily affecting libraries, schools, religious institutions, and businesses. Law enforcement agencies at both local and national levels are actively addressing these and other similar swatting-type incidents.
Our ongoing investigation suggests that these threats are not coordinated actions but rather a decentralized effort aimed at causing disruption. Notably, these hoax calls exhibit discernible characteristics and patterns that indicate their lack of credibility.
The Department will evaluate all bomb threats or swatting calls. After a thorough evaluation, the Department will deploy the necessary and appropriate response. Police responses will balance the goals of maximizing safety while, when possible, minimizing disruption.
The Evanston Police Department remains committed to the safety and well-being of our community. We urge all residents to report any suspicious incidents promptly by calling 847-866-5000. In an emergency, please dial 9-1-1.
