Collage of diverse programs and people

Thank you, Evanston, for supporting your library.

As you have no doubt seen in the news, in recent weeks libraries across northern Illinois, including the Evanston Public Library, have received repeated bomb threats that have forced us to evacuate and cancel programs and services critical to our community.

Every threat has been proven false. Still, as librarians dedicated to the work of providing free access to information and resources, we've experienced every possible emotion in response: fear, sadness, outrage, and -- following an outpouring of community support late last week -- immense gratitude.

It is a difficult moment for libraries across the country -- first a pandemic that closed our doors and challenged us to work in new ways, then a rise in book challenges, and now this.

Again and again, Evanstonians have offered encouraging words and tokens of appreciation to our staff. You've worn your EPL tees and tote bags, posted your shared sadness and outrage on social media, and even donated -- we've received dozens of gifts from both old and new donors wanting to demonstrate just how much Evanston stands by its library.

And to that, we simply want to say thank you.

Your support means the world to us, and in turn we will continue to serve you in our mission of promoting the development of independent and literate citizens, and providing equitable access to Evanston's cultural, intellectual and information resources.

Sincerely,

The staff of the Evanston Public Library

More ways to pitch in

If you're interested in learning more about how you can support your local library in this moment, we have a few suggestions:

  • Come to a program. Check out our calendar and make it a point to join us. Banned Books Week runs through October 7th and we have several events promoting our mission of intellectual freedom, including virtual a virtual event today at 7:00 pm, featuring Secretary of State and State Librarian Alexi Giannaoulias, a vocal supporter of Illinois' libraries.
  • Give. Your donations support programs and services that amplify diverse voices and promote equitable access to our resources. No matter the amount, we appreciate your generosity.
  • Wear your EPL pride. We receive a small portion of the proceeds from our popular 'I Read Banned Books' and 'Support Your Local Library' tees, totes and other gear, but mostly, we just love seeing our library fans out and about around Evanston.

For 150 years, the Library has provided educational, culturally-rich resources for all residents, helped children prepare for school through the joys of reading and learning, celebrated Evanston’s diversity, and helped residents find information they seek. The Library is more than a building of books; it is a place to meet, connect, learn, and explore. To learn more, visit www.epl.org.
