City Initiatives
 Evanston Liquor Control Review Board to Vote on Liquor Tax Repeal
The Evanston Liquor Control Review Board is meeting on Friday, October 13, at 1 p.m. to review and vote on the repeal of the liquor tax and replacement of it with a food and beverage tax. On June 30, the Board discussed replacing the liquor tax with a 1.5 percent food and beverage tax. Final approval of a repeal of the liquor tax would be considered by the City Council at a later date. A detailed staff report will be posted closer to the meeting date on the Liquor Control Review Board website.

 City Grants Grace Period for Fair Workweek Ordinance
Evanston has extended a grace period for employers to adjust to the requirements of the newly enacted Fair Workweek Ordinance (24-O-23). This ordinance, designed to enhance employee well-being and work-life balance, will be enforced beginning January 1, 2024. Read the press release.
 Plastic Bag Ban Ordinance Update
In an effort to reduce plastic waste and encourage behavioral change throughout the city, the Evanston City Council voted on May 22 to approve a complete ban on plastic bags in all city businesses and impose a $0.10 tax on remaining bag types at large retail stores. The “Retail Single Use Bag Tax”, also known as Ordinance 1-O-23, went into effect on August 1, 2023 and enforcement will begin January 1, 2024.
