Traffic Stop Leads to a Unlawful Use of a Weapon Charge
EVANSTON, IL - On September 1, 2023, at approximately 12:20 a.m., Evanston Patrol Officers were in the area of Chicago Avenue and Howard Street when they observed a silver Honda with what appeared to be illegally tinted windows. The officers performed a traffic stop on the vehicle.
Upon stopping the vehicle, the officer made contact with the driver and checked the tint on the windows. The officer's check of the tint confirmed it was not compliant with state statute. While one of the officers was having contact with the passenger, Kevon Jones, he observed that Jones had a FOID card. Based on this observation, the officer asked Jones if he was armed. Jones stated that he was.
The officer instructed Jones to exit the vehicle. The officer then recovered .45-caliber Glock handgun from Jones' waistband. Click here for a picture of the handgun.
Jones was transported to the station for further investigation. The investigation revealed that Jones did have a FOID card but did not have a Concealed Carry License. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office reviewed the investigation and approved one felony count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
The driver was cited for illegal tint and released at the scene.
