Corporation Counsel Nicholas Cummings Announces Resignation
EVANSTON, IL - Corporation Counsel Nicholas Cummings has announced that he will resign from his position with the City of Evanston effective August 11 for a new opportunity as General Counsel of the Chicago Park District.
Cummings has served the City of Evanston for over three years, beginning in January 2020 as Deputy City Attorney and then taking on the role of Corporation Counsel beginning in April 2021.
During his tenure, Cummings played an integral role in the City’s historic Reparations for the Black community, helping to research and craft its first initiative, the Restorative Housing Program. Work on this program earned the Evanston Law Department the ABA’s Jefferson B. Fordham Award for Government Law Office of the Year.
Additionally, Cummings helped lead the charge in implementing the recommendations in the independent Salvatore, Prescott, Porter & Porter report following the lakefront lifeguard investigation. He also helped manage collective bargaining with the multiple employee unions, of which, three out of four have new contracts.
“I would like to thank Nick for his service to Evanston, including his outstanding work on Reparations, which is often used as a potential blueprint for many municipalities nationwide. Nick also played a key role in helping the City navigate the COVID pandemic and changes in leadership. We wish Nick the best of luck in his new role at CPD,” said City Manager Stowe.
Deputy City Attorney Alex Ruggie will assume the Interim Corporation Counsel position upon Cumming’s departure. The Corporation Counsel position will be externally posted in late August.
