Lughnasadh, (pronounced "lu-na-sa") celebrated on August 1, is an ancient Celtic celebration of the first grain harvest of the season. For the holiday, people harvested the last of the grain, and by evening the first loaf of bread would be baked and shared amongst the community. This holiday was adopted by the Medieval Christian church and called Lammas, or Loaf Mass. Now we understand that noticing and celebrating nature's changes is a proven mental health boost. Catch our suggestions on how to celebrate this holiday and the late summer harvest:
-
Get a taste of Lughnasadh: (Yum!) Visit one of the top 10 local bakeries to buy some fresh made bread.
-
Craft your own corn decorations. Get in touch with the harvest by pasting and painting your own lego-stamped paper corn!
-
Spend some time outside! Looking for a smaller day trip to celebrate those last moments of summer sun? Try a nature-filled day hike in the Chicagoland area!
-
Read! Check out our best-of-nature booklist, our Blueberry Award Winners, for more ideas on what to notice in nature.
