 Today’s newsletter is a recap of major events reported between June 29th and July 12th, 2023.

Major Incidents
 Robberies: On June 30th at 2:50 a.m., an unknown subject entered a restaurant on the 100 block of Asbury, showed a gun, and demanded money. On July 3rd at 2:30 p.m., the victim reported a subject robbed him of his phone on the 1900 block of Dempster. Also on the 3rd around 7:30 p.m., an unknown subject entered a restaurant on the 1100 block of Howard, displayed a weapon, and demanded the cash register to be opened. The subject fled with food.
Carjacking: On July 11th at 1:18 a.m., the victim, a rideshare driver, was threatened with a handgun and his vehicle was taken.
Motor Vehicle Thefts: On June 27th, between 9:00 p.m, and 9:45 p.m., unknown subject(s) took the victim’s vehicle from the 1800 block of Madison. The vehicle was later recovered in Skokie. On June 29th at 5:25 p.m., unknown subjects attempted to steal a vehicle from the 1400 block of Seward by peeling the steering column. On July 7th at 12:23 p.m., the victim made a delivery on the 1400 block of Greenleaf and an unknown subject stole his vehicle.
Residential & Garage Burglaries: Three residential burglaries were reported. Sometime between June 27th and July 7th, unknown subject(s) kicked in the rear door of a residence on the 800 block of Sherman. Clothing was taken. On June 30th, unknown subjects gained entry to a room on the 1500 block of Oak by unknown means and took a wallet. On June 28th at 2:12 p.m., unknown subject(s) forced entry to a residence on the 1100 block of Emerson, but nothing was taken.
An unknown subject gained entry to an unsecured garage on the 2300 block of Grey on June 30th at 3:20 a.m., and took lawn and garden tools.
Commercial Burglary: Sometime between June 28th and June 29th, unknown subject(s) gained entry to an office suite on the 800 block of Davis and took a cashbox.
Vehicle Burglaries: Three vehicle burglaries were reported. Two of the vehicles were left unsecured.
Catalytic Converter Thefts: Fifteen catalytic converters were reported stolen. Nine of the vehicles were Toyota Priuses.
Shots Fired Calls: There were 4 shots fired calls. On July 1st at 2:15 a.m., unknown subjects fired shots on the street on the 1100 block of Dobson. Two unoccupied vehicles were damaged and shell casings were recovered. On July 7th at 10:41 a.m., a citizen located spent shell casings in the area of Brown & Emerson. No shots fired calls were reported in the area. Two other calls of shots fired were recorded, but nothing was located.
Package Theft: Two package thefts were reported. The Evanston Police appreciates the citizens who share their camera footage of these incidents.
Bicycle Theft: Three bicycles were reported stolen. One of the bicycles was secured to a bike rack.
Other Information
Online Non-Emergency Incident Reporting
The Evanston Police Department has launched online non-emergency incident reporting. This self-reporting system is commonly referred to as P2C - Police to Citizen. It efficiently and conveniently allows a citizen to file a report from virtually anywhere with a computer or mobile device. If a citizen does not have access to a computer or mobile device, there is a workstation available for public use in the police department lobby at the Records Bureau window. Stolen Vehicle Tracking
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office announced a “Tracked Vehicle Program” to work with vehicle owners, manufacturers, and dealerships to provide a rapid response to vehicle thefts or carjackings, and more quickly recover the victim’s vehicle. Vehicle owners can visit this link for more information.
Child Safety Seat Installation
In the State of Illinois, all children under the age of eight must be secured in an appropriate child safety seat. Child safety seats include infant seats, convertible seats (Rear-facing for infants and forward-facing for toddlers), and booster seats that are used with the vehicle’s lap and shoulder belt system. Request a child seat installation or inspection through 3-1-1.
Recovered Property
When property is recovered and turned into the police department, every reasonable attempt will be made to identify and return the property to its rightful owner. In many instances property is recovered but never reunited with its owner because there was never a report filed. If you have an item that you have lost or had stolen in Evanston, your first action should be to file a police report.
Even if you have not filed a report, you can still check with the Property Bureau during the Public Operating Hours to see if an item has been turned in. You can contact the Bureau at 847-866-5029. This list is updated daily and allows you to easily contact us by email if you believe an item may be yours. Ongoing Gun Buyback Program
The Gun Buyback Program is an opportunity for Evanston residents to turn in a functioning firearm to the Evanston Police, and in turn, receive $100. A buyback can be set up at any time through the Evanston Police Department (3-1-1 or the non-emergency line). An officer will go to the residence and collect the firearm, and the resident will be given a voucher that can be exchanged for $100 at the City Collector’s Office located in the Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave.
Please do not bring a firearm to the police department without approval from an EPD supervisor.
