As you may know, peregrine falcons returned to the Evanston Public Library this year. Both parents were new to the library; Coach Kevin and his mate (who only had a number, no name) had one baby falcon this year. At the exciting banding ceremony on June 9, the library selected, from amongst many community suggestions, the name "Bibli" for the baby and "Teca," for mom, derived from the Spanish word for library, biblioteca. After a couple of weeks struggling to find his wings, Bibli tumbled over the ledge of the library's column nest for a second time on Sunday, July 2.
Where is Bibli now? Together with Mary Hennen of the Field Museum, the Peregrine Falcon Watch Group decided to take Bibli to the Willowbrook Wildlife Center to learn to fly. The vet at Willowbrook will assess his condition, he'll hang out in a large flight chamber with his new friends, and he'll build up his flight muscles. Meet some of Bibli's classmates here. Bibli will be released at the end of the summer, when peregrines usually are released from their parents' territory. We wish Bibli well in his "studies!"
We are all looking forward to next year, to see if Coach Kevin and Teca return to the library to make a scrape; in the meantime, your youngest kids can watch this simple falcon video to learn more about falcons! Older kids can find a book at x598.96 at either library location.
