DRUM ROLL! We can't wait to share the terrific books we found last year; you can come to the award celebration.
Evanston Public Library started the Blueberry Awards in 2021 to honor the best climate and nature books each year for kids 3-10 years old and to support parents, teachers and nature center staff who work with kids. After the announcement, swing by the library for a display of all the books and to pick up our annual flyer.
Blueberry Awards Celebration Join the Evanston Public Library staff, Ecology Center staff and local climate and literature celebrities to hear about the 2022 Blueberry Award winners and the announcement of the overall winner! We will also announce a Children's Climate Action and Resilience Plan winner-the book that helps kids meet Evanston's CARP goals. Vote in the Audience Favorite contest after hearing book talks of many of the books. The Ecology Center will make a nice bonfire, offer a chance to interact with the Ecology Center animals, and even serve popcorn. Then you can take a walk in the Ladd Arboretum to read the Blueberry Award winner at a newly installed temporary book walk! Space is limited. Purim celebrates a young Jewish girl, Esther, who spoke up for her people despite imminent personal danger in the court of Persian King Xerxes (485-465 BCE). This Jewish holiday runs the evening of Monday, March 6 through to the evening of Tuesday, March 7 this year. During the reading of the Esther's story, it's tradition to boo, hiss and use loud noisemakers whenever Haman, the story's villain, is mentioned. One of the most beloved traditions of Purim is eating hamantaschen, the delicious three-cornered cookies that are a remembrance of Haman's hat!
Holi is a joyous Hindu festival of colors running from the evening of Tuesday, March 7 through Wednesday, March 8 this year. Celebrated by Hindus all over the world, Holi is a way to welcome in spring, and also is a new beginning when people can start fresh. People celebrate the holiday by lighting a bonfire the night before and, the next day, throwing colorful powder onto other revelers. Happy Holi to all who celebrate!
