Evanston Police Provide an Update on the Chute Middle School Handgun Investigation
EVANSTON, IL - On February 6, 2023, at approximately 11 a.m. the Evanston Police Department responded to Chute Middle School in the 1400 block of Oakton for a handgun recovered from a student. The initial investigation revealed that a student was displaying a handgun to other students. A student then alerted school officials about the handgun. School officials made contact with the armed student and recovered the loaded handgun without incident. Officers took custody of the handgun and transported the student to the police station for further investigation.
The student was a 13 year-old male resident of Evanston. The school was initially put on soft lockdown, however the lockdown has been lifted. Click here for a picture of the recovered handgun.
The investigation did not reveal any credible threats against other students or school officials. The investigation did reveal that the handgun was taken in a burglary to vehicle sometime after 11 p.m. on February 5.
The 13 year-old was charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon on School Grounds and referred to juvenile court. There are no charges pending for the burglary to vehicle at this time.
