What's Setsubun? A wonderful New Year celebration as well as a Japanese cultural and Shinto holiday, celebrated on February 3, 2022 this year!
This holiday traditionally contains a ritual to banish bad luck, disease, and evil spirits from the past year and to invite good luck and health for the coming year. Someone in the family, usually the father, wears an Oni mask. An Oni is a demon or troll in Japanese culture. The children in the household then pelt the Oni with dried soy beans while shouting, "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" "鬼は外!福は内!", or "Oni go out! Blessings come in!"
What to eat during Setsubun? Ehomaki is a thick, rolled sushi. Eating the entire roll with 7 different elements, in silence, is the way to bring yourself good luck in the coming year.
