Due to a forecasted blizzard with dangerously high winds and low temperatures, followed by the holidays, EPL will have several closures over the weekend. Closures are at both the Main Library and Robert Crown Branch locations, unless otherwise noted:
- Thursday, Dec. 22: Closing at 1 p.m.
- Friday, Dec. 23: Closed
- Saturday, Dec. 24: Main Library open 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Crown Branch closed.
- Sunday, Dec. 25: Closed
- Monday, Dec. 26: Closed
Need to get out of the cold?
The City of Evanston has opened warming shelters at the following locations:
Robert Crown Community Center, 1801 Main St.
- Wednesday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Saturday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, 1655 Foster St.
- Wednesday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Community members who need shelter outside of these hours should call/text Evanston 311 at 847-448-4311 (open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hours will be extended.) or the Evanston Police Department non-emergency service desk at 847-866-5000 (open 24/7).   Art, play, and tough conversations with kids made easier...sign up for Dedicated to the Dream
EPL’s Dedicated to the Dream program is an invitation for curious families to grow together and have conversations about race through family-friendly, hands-on workshops. Each workshop incorporates art and play to affirm all shades of skin, explore cultural and racial identities, learn accurate history, and talk about the content and feelings that come up. The first workshop is Saturday, Jan. 21, and this year we have more formats available for busy families. Learn more.
 Take a Winter Storywalk down the Main-Dempster Mile
This winter, EPL's Robert Crown Branch is partnering with the Main-Dempster Mile to bring you our Winter Storywalk featuring a special guest star! The Storywalk features an original story split into 12 parts, and each part of the story can be read at one of our 12 participating businesses. Now through Jan. 7, grab a raffle ticket, answer all the questions, and return it to the Robert Crown branch for a chance to win a $50 gift card to a participating store. Get details.
 Resolve to start the new year in better health
Resolve to live healthier in 2023 with this introduction to the importance of diet for living a happy and full life, with Diet, Heart Health, and Living a Full Life. This mini-course offered by the NU Emeriti Organization and EPL is taught by pediatric cardiologist Dr. Barbara J. Deal and preventive adult cardiologist Dr. Stephen Devries, and moderated by EPL Health & Wellness Librarian Irene Williams. Recommended readings for this non-credit, no-charge mini-course are sent to participants before the first session. The first session is Wednesday, Jan. 18, 6-7:30 p.m. in person or virtual. Kick off your new year with joy. Best-selling essayist and poet Ross Gay shows us how Jan. 11.
Ross Gay is the author of essay collection Inciting Joy and four books of poetry, and winner of the 2015 National Book Critics Circle Award and the 2016 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. His first collection of essays, The Book of Delights, was released in 2019 and was a New York Times bestseller. He'll be in conversation with Dan “Sully” Sullivan, a three-time Chicago Poetry Slam Champion.
