Almost 100 Weapons turned in at Gun Buyback Event
EVANSTON, IL - On December 3, 2022, the Evanston Police Department partnered with the Evanston Community Foundation and Mount Zion Baptist Church to host a gun buyback event. The event took place at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church located at 1113 Clark Street, from 10 A.M. until 1 P.M.
Participants that turned in a firearm received $125 cash per firearm. Turned in pellet, BB, or airsoft guns and ammunition received $30 cash. Funds for the gun buyback came from donations held by the Evanston Community Foundation.
The event took in a total of 98 weapons. Click here for a picture of the weapons. The weapons total included 54 firearms. The remaining weapons were various pellet, BB, or airsoft guns. Ammunition was also turned in at the event.
The amnesty based gun buyback provided an opportunity to turn in unwanted or unused firearms so they can be disposed of properly. Since they will be destroyed in accordance with state and federal guidelines, these weapons are no longer at risk of being abused or entering into the circulation of criminal activity.
Evanston Police would like to thank the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church for hosting the event. Evanston Police would also like to recognize the efforts of Carolyn Murray and members of the police department that worked the event. Police and community collaboration were essential to making this event a success.
