Evanston Police Announce Upcoming Tobacco Compliance Checks
EVANSTON, IL - The Evanston Police Department has announced upcoming tobacco compliance checks. Tobacco compliance checks are done pursuant to a grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services and seek to reduce tobacco sales to persons under the age of 21.
The Evanston Police Department is planning three tobacco compliance checks starting in November and concluding in the spring of 2023. Each compliance check will involve the Evanston Police Department having a person under 21 attempt to purchase a tobacco product. This will be performed at approximately 30 tobacco retailers throughout Evanston. If the retailer sells a tobacco product during the check, they will be cited.
Citations and enforcement are not the only tools to gain complaince, educating retailers is also important. These compliance checks are an excellent opportunity for retailers to refocus their vigilance in an effort to ensure they are not selling tobacco products to customers under 21.
