Evanston Police Charge Man with October 19 Arson
EVANSTON, IL - On October 19, 2022, at approximately 10:10 p.m. Evanston Police officers responded to the CVS in the 100 block of Asbury Avenue for an arson investigation. Officers arrived and discovered the trash can near the bus stop was fully engulfed by fire. The Evanston Fire Department arrived and extinguished the fire.
Assisted by the Evanston 911 Communications Center, officers initiated their investigation. City cameras in the area of the arson captured the incident. The offender was captured on video setting the fire and leaving on foot.
The investigation expanded to include two other incidents. One of these incidents included a grass fire in the 900 block of Howard that took place a few hours before the arson at CVS. The Communications Center reviewed video from city cameras. The video captured a subject leaving the area of the fire, but did not capture the fire being set.
Approximately two hours after the CVS incident, an officer located a trash can on fire at Ridge Avenue and Howard Street on the Chicago side of the street. The Communications Center reviewed video from city cameras. The video captured the offender setting the fire and leaving on foot. The offender was the same subject from the CVS arson and the same subject leaving the scene of the grass and brush fire.
Shortly after midnight on October 20, officers located the offender captured on videos, Michael Flynn. Officers took Flynn into custody for the arson. After Flynn was in custody, he made an admission to setting the fires.
