November is Native American Heritage Month because Thanksgiving is a time when we have shared incorrect and sometimes hurtful images and ideas about the indigenous peoples of the Americas. And we all want to learn and do better!
Evanston Public Library has just adopted a Land Acknowledgement to center the native peoples whose land the library occupies. The Library Board voted to approve this at their October meeting, but it is not official and should not be read aloud until it is spoken by an indigenous person at our next board meeting on November 16. All are welcome to virtually attend that historic meeting. Want to help kids better understand our history and appreciate our contemporary fellow citizens?

Transgender Day of Remembrance is a solemn day to remember those who lost their lives due to anti-trans violence. This day is preceded by Transgender Week of Awareness, November 13-20, a good thing to commemorate for all kids and their parents! Check out our kids booklists:
Some trans families have found the library a safe place because our staff train in supporting trans families, because we have an All Gender bathroom, and because we have a number of trans employees kids might meet. For online support groups, resource directories, or educational resources for parents of transgender or nonbinary children try: Trans Families or Parents For Transgender Equity National Council at the Human Rights Campaign among other organizations.
