Evanston Police Department to Host Third Catalytic Converter Marking Event
EVANSTON, IL - On Sunday, October 30, 2022, the Evanston Police Department will be holding its third Catalytic Converter Anti-Theft Marking Event. Catalytic converters are stolen because of the value of the precious metals they contain. Having a marked catalytic converter may help to deter theft.
EPD Officers will use spray paint to mark the catalytic converter under your vehicle, making it less desirable for potential theft. Paint will only be visible from underneath the vehicle and will not affect operation. This event is free and open to Evanston residents and those that work in Evanston. Pre-registration for the event is required and attendees must present proof of residency or employment within the City of Evanston upon checking in.
The Department analyzed its crime data to identify vehicles at higher risk for a catalytic converter theft. Based on that analysis, this event is limited to vehicle models from year 2019 or older from the following manufacturers:
- Chevrolet
- Ford
- Honda
- Hyundai
- Jeep
- Kia
- Mitsubishi
- Nissan
- Toyota
Most vehicle models newer than 2019 are designed to prevent catalytic converter theft. Hondas and Toyotas account for about 80 percent of targeted cars.
