Work to begin at Davis Street, September 19
Description
Beginning September 19, Metra will be repainting its Davis Street and Dempster Street bridges that carry its Union Pacific North Line trains. Rotating lane closures will be implemented while this work is completed.
Schedule
Davis Street: Work will begin on the Davis Street bridge beginning September 19 and will take approximately 4 to 6 weeks to complete. During the Davis Street project’s first phase, traffic and bike lanes on the north side of the street will be closed to traffic, followed by lane closures on the south side of the street. Davis Street will remain open to westbound traffic throughout the project. Each closure will last for approximately two weeks as contractors remove the old paint and protective coatings and apply new. The lanes will be closed on a rotating basis to minimize traffic impacts.
Dempster Street: After work is completed at Davis Street, the contractor will move to Dempster Street. Westbound lanes of Dempster will be closed first, and all westbound traffic will be rerouted north at Chicago Avenue to Lake Street, west to Maple Avenue and south to Dempster. Work in the eastbound lanes will commence immediately after work is completed in the westbound lanes. During this phase, eastbound traffic will be rerouted north at Maple Avenue to Lake Street, east to Chicago Avenue and then south to Dempster Street. Each closure is expected to last approximately two weeks.
Other Impacts
While businesses in the area will remain open throughout the project, signage will be placed to inform pedestrians of sidewalk closures and traffic detours. Parking spots immediately adjacent to the work area will be blocked off, including parking along Elmwood Avenue during the Davis Street phase of the project.
Metra passengers using the Davis Street Metra Station are advised to access the station through the Church Street entrances at the station’s north end or via the accessible ramps during the work on the north side of the street.
