What is an Equinox? Every year there are two solstices (when the day or the night is longest of the year) and two equinoxes (when day and night have an equal number of hours.) The Autumnal Equinox marks the astronomical beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere, taking place this year on Thursday, September 22. Ancient Celts, modern neopagans, ecological activists, and nature preschool teachers all use these holidays as a way to celebrate change of the seasons and a deepening in our relationship with other living things. In Japan, Autumnal Equinox Day (秋分の日, Shūbun no hi) is a public holiday.
However, everyone can mark the start of fall. Here are some fun ways to celebrate the change of seasons:
1.Read a good book! Start with our Autumnal Equinox Booklist!
2. Make a Gratitude list! You can do this every morning or evening, or just once together. The Fall Equinox is the second of three Harvest festivals in the Celtic calendar, a great time to give thanks.
3. Visit a Farm! Locally, Wagner Farm, maintained by the Glenview Park District, is a great experience for younger kids, or take your older kids apple picking or to volunteer at the 2.5 acre Talking Farm!
4. Decorate Your Home for Fall! Try this easy leaf lantern!
5 More! Check out this Indiana mom's ideas for a great equinox celebration with kids! O get a Museum Adventure Pass for the weekend. One pass per family per week.
May you have a sweet new year! Rosh Hashanah or Jewish New Year takes place starting the evening of Sunday, September 25 this year. Apples dipped in honey are one ancient part of this celebration, going back to at least 1300 CE, as is the traditional sounding of the ram's horn.
Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the solemn 10 day period of self-examination, confession and desire for mercy that culminates in Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur or the Day of Atonement, this year celebrated on Tuesday, October 4, is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. Jews traditionally observe this holy day by fasting and praying. Together, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur comprise the High Holy Days.
Here are two fun things to do with kids around Rosh Hashanah:
