What's on the roof of the Dempster Beach Office?
The City has upgraded the computerized Thor Guard lightning protection system at Dempster Street Beach Office, which can predict the probability of a lightning strike within 8 to 20 minutes before it will strike.
What does it do? When there is a potential for lightning within the coverage area, a strobe light turns on and a warning horn sounds with an uninterrupted 15-second blast. When this happens, park users must leave and seek shelter. When the system senses conditions are safe, the strobe light turns off and the horn sounds three short four-second blasts.
