Hospital Eruv Project
In the Jewish traditional community, one is forbidden to carry anything in the public domain on the Jewish Sabbath (from sundown on Friday through nightfall on Saturday). An answer is an eruv—an enclosure that makes a public domain into a private domain.
For several years, the Chicago Mitzvah Campaign has rented space in the CTA building on Central Street where it operates a hospitality center for Jewish families who have loved ones in the hospital across the street. When it comes to the Jewish Sabbath, however, it is very difficult to carry things from the hospital to the hospitality center and back.
The Chicago Mitzvah Campaign proposes to create an eruv to enclose the area between the hospital and the hospitality center. For the most part, the enclosure will take advantage of existing natural boundaries (e.g., buildings and fences). The enclosure will be completed by running a thin but sturdy wire from the hospital parking structure to the medical building across Central Street and another wire from the women’s hospital to a 20-foot pole to be installed among the trees on city property across the street.
NorthShore Hospital and the CTA are both supportive of the project. City approval is also needed. (A portion of south Evanston is already part of the Rogers Park eruv.)
Traffic Camera Ticket Scam
The Evanston Police Department is warning the public about a traffic camera ticket scam. Several citizens have reported receiving emails notifying them they have been issued a "Moving Violation Recorded by Traffic Camera". The email also states the violation was recorded by a traffic camera in Evanston.
The City of Evanston does not have any traffic cameras. If a citizen receives an email claiming a traffic camera violation within the City of Evanston, the email is fraudulent. Do not respond or attempt to pay the citation, it is a scam with the likely goal of committing identity theft.
