Wednesday, August 31 begins the celebration of Lord Ganesha's Birthday. Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most eagerly awaited festivals for Hindus! It is a 10-day festival that celebrates Ganesha, the joyful deity of wisdom and prosperity who is a remover of obstacles, lover of sweets, and the son of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. Hindus celebrate the 10-day long festival by performing puja (home worship), and holding lavish feasts to seek the blessings of Ganesha.
The Mid Autumn Festival is a popular family holiday in China and other Asian countries, September 10-12 this year. This festival is timed to catch the Moon at its fullest size, coinciding with harvest time. The festival dates back over 3,000 years and is based on the legend of Chang'e, the moon goddess. People display lanterns and eat mooncake, a rich pastry treat with various fillings. Everyone who celebrates travels to join large family groups, not unlike Thanksgiving in the United States. The circle of the moon and the mooncake is echoed in the "circle" of family groupings. Want to learn more?
