Five other Evanston beaches remain open for swimming
EVANSTON, IL - The City of Evanston’s Parks & Recreation Department today announced that it anticipates Greenwood Street Beach will be closed for the remainder of the 2022 summer season to ensure adequate staffing and public safety at the City’s five other swimming beaches.
South Boulevard Beach, Lee Street Beach, Clark Street Beach, and Lighthouse Beach continue to be open and fully staffed. In addition, the Northwestern-operated Lincoln Street Beach is also open. Residents can check beach status daily at cityofevanston.org/beach.
“The safety of visitors and staff is our top priority as we work to provide exceptional lakefront recreation opportunities this summer,” said Parks & Recreation Director Audrey Thompson. “Amid a nationwide lifeguard shortage and swimming closures in a number of Chicago-area communities, our team has focused on retaining and recruiting USLA-certified lifeguards committed to a culture of safety, accountability and trust. We appreciate the public’s understanding as we work to ensure safety for all beachgoers and staff this season.”
The City has so far welcomed 23 new certified lifeguard recruits for the 2022 season. Candidates interested in applying to join the City’s lakefront team are encouraged to visit cityofevanston.org/jobs to learn more.
The Parks & Recreation Department elected to close Greenwood Street Beach this season in order to direct limited resources and maintain adequate staffing levels at the City's other swimming beaches. Greenwood Street Beach received the fewest number of beach visitors in 2021.
