Hit and Run Investigation Leads to Arrests for Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and a False 911 Call
EVANSTON, IL - On June 13, 2022, at approximately 1:10 a.m. Evanston Police responded to a hit and run incident in the 600 block of Oakton Street. When officers arrived on scene they investigated the hit and run which included the interview a witness. The witness stated that the offending vehicle struck a street sign and fled the scene. Officers observed the damaged street sign. They also located a tree that appeared to have fresh damage indicating that it was also struck in the hit and run. The witness provided an offending vehicle description.
Officers searched the area for the offending vehicle. They located a vehicle matching the description in the 300 block of Sherman Avenue, a red 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The vehicle had damage to the passenger side and windshield.
Officers located two subjects standing near the vehicle, Renaldo Tillmon and Terry Ross. Tillmon was the registered owner of the Monte Carlo. Tillmon admitted ownership of the Monte Carlo and was taken into custody for a hit and run investigation.
The Monte Carlo was going to be towed as part of the investigation. Prior to being towed officers conducted an inventory search. During the search an officer located a case in the back seat that contained a 9 mm Hi Point Model C9 handgun from the rear seat. Tillmon did not have a FOID card or Concealed Carry License.
While officers were investigating the hit and run, Evanston Police dispatch received a 911 call of an armed robbery in the area of Callan Avenue and Howard Street. The investigation into this 911 call revealed that it was a false call and no armed robbery had taken place. Additionally, the investigation revealed the 911 call originated from Terry Ross's cellphone. Ross made an admission to officers that he placed the false 911 call.
