Evanston Police Arrest Gary Man for Reckless Discharge, Unlawful Use of a Weapon
EVANSTON, IL - On May 12, 2022, at approximately 7:24 p.m. Evanston Police responded to a call of shots fired in the area of 2300 block of Foster St. The caller stated that a male subject was standing in the alley brandishing a handgun. The subject then fired off a shot before fleeing the area in a black car with Indiana registration.
Detectives from the Evanston Police Special Operations Group responded to the area of Foster St. and Darrow Ave. where they observed a black Mercedes bearing Indiana registration. Detectives suspected the reckless discharge offender could be in the black Mercedes. Detectives performed a high risk traffic stop in the 1900 block of Dewey to investigate further.
Detectives made contact with and detained the driver, Edward Davis. Davis was the registered owner of the Mercedes. Detectives and officers continued the investigation and Davis was positively identified by a witness as the offender who fired shots in the alley of the 2300 block of Foster St.
A search of Davis' vehicle led to the recovery of a box of .22 caliber ammunition. A search of the area led to the recovery of a Phoenix Arms Model HP22A, loaded with .22 caliber ammunition. A search of the reckless discharge scene led to the recovery of unfired .22 caliber rounds. The ammunition recovered from the Mercedes, the handgun, and the original scene all matched in caliber and brand, indicating that Davis used the recovered handgun in the reckless discharge but discarded the gun prior to being stopped by detectives.
During the investigation detectives recovered drag paraphernalia from the Mercedes. Detectives also learned that Edwards had a suspended driver's license and no proof of insurance. Davis did not have a FOID card or a Concealed Carry License. The Mercedes was towed from the scene.
There were no injuries reported in this incident.
The Cook County State's Attorney's Office reviewed the case and approved felony charges for Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon and Reckless Discharge of a Firearm. Click here for a photograph of the recovered weapon.
