Major Incidents
Homicide: On April 16 at 9:20 p.m. Evanston Police responded to a residence in the 100 block of Callan for a woman that had suffered several stab wounds. Inside the residence, responding officers located the victim, a 30-year-old female resident of Evanston. The victim was transported to St. Francis Hospital by the Evanston Fire Department where she was pronounced deceased. A male relative was arrested and charged.
Aggravated Battery: On April 19 at 11:30 p.m. Evanston Police responded to the 1500 block of Sherman Ave. for a person shot. Around the same time, the victim walked from the 1500 block of Sherman Ave. to the Evanston Police Department lobby. Officers met the victim, a 21-year-old male resident of Niles, in the lobby of the police department. The victim had suffered two gunshot wounds, one to the abdomen and a second to the buttock area. The victim was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The victim reported he was with two known offenders when he was shot. The case remains under investigation.
Robberies: Four robberies were reported over the past two weeks. On April 11th at 9:07 a.m., the victim reported that an unknown subject attempted to rob him at the Main Street CTA station. On April 13th at 7:12 p.m., a food delivery driver made a delivery on the 2200 block of Foster. The subjects shoved the driver and took the food without paying. On April 13th at 7:30 p.m., the victim reported being on the CTA near the Foster Street station when he was approached by two unknown subjects. They threatened him with pepper spray and took his phone and cash. On April 15th at 7:15 p.m., the victim reported being on the CTA near the Davis Street station when three unknown subjects approached him, threatened to harm him, and took his phone.
Shots Fired: On April 6th at 10:09 p.m., officers responded to the 1300 block of McDaniel for a shots fired call. The caller reported hearing shots and seeing a light-colored sedan speed away. Officers recovered two shell casings. There were four additional shots fired calls. No damage or shell casings were located.
Fire Investigation: On April 19th at 8:20 p.m., EPD and EFD were called to the alley on the 2300 block of Sherman for several vehicles on fire. Evanston Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire. EPD and EFD are investigating the cause of the fire.
Motor Vehicle Thefts: Four vehicles were reported stolen. On April 3rd around 6:30 a.m., unknown subjects took a white 2022 Kia Niro using a key fob. Sometime during the overnight hours between April 4th and April 5th, unknown subjects may have used a key to take a red 2019 Chevrolet Cruze from the 600 block of Judson. During the overnight hours of April 11th and 12th, unknown subjects took a gray 2012 Honda Odyssey from the 2700 block of Woodbine by unknown means. During the early morning hours of April 12th, unknown subjects took a turquoise 2022 Genuine Buddy scooter from the 1100 block of Hartrey.
Residential Storage Burglaries: Two secured residential storage areas were entered. Between April 8th and 15th, unknown subjects gained entry to a storage area on the 2200 block of Maple and took snowblowers. On April 13th around 9:30 a.m., an unknown subject gained entry to a secured residential laundry room on the 900 block of Mulford. The subject damaged washers and dryers, but it is unknown how much U.S. currency was taken from the machines.
Garage Burglary: Two garage burglaries were reported. Neither garage showed signs of forced entry and bicycles were taken.
Commercial Burglary: One commercial burglary and two attempts were reported to the police. On April 12th at 1:00 a.m., a subject gained entry to a closed store on the 600 block of Chicago and attempted to steal alcohol. EPD took the subject into custody. On April 15th at 10:20 p.m., a subject used a pry tool to force entry to a restaurant on the 800 block of Chicago. The subject took miscellaneous items. On April 16th at 10:15 a.m., a subject attempted to force entry to a spa on the 1700 block of Sherman by throwing a ceramic planter through the door glass. Entry was not made.
Vehicle Burglaries: Eight vehicle burglaries were reported over the past two weeks. All of the vehicles were left unsecured or had open or loose windows. In most cases, change and small electronics were taken from the vehicles.
Catalytic Converter Thefts: One vehicle was damaged when its catalytic converter was removed. Subjects attempted to take the catalytic converter from a second vehicle. The vehicles damaged were a Honda and a Dodge.
Package Thefts: Four packages were reported stolen from residences.
Bicycle Thefts: In addition to the bicycles taken from garages, there were four bicycles taken - two from bicycle racks and two from residential yards.
Other Information
Crime Prevention Alert:
Over the past few weeks, several license plates have been stolen from vehicles in Evanston. Sometimes the thieves will put the stolen plates on similar vehicles. On occasion, the plates are put on vehicles that are used during the commission of a crime. If your license plate is stolen, please be sure to report it to the Evanston Police Department.
Child Safety Seat Installation
In the State of Illinois, all children under the age of eight must be secured in an appropriate child safety seat. Child safety seats include infant seats, convertible seats (Rear-facing for infants and forward-facing for toddlers), and booster seats that are used with the vehicle’s lap and shoulder belt system. Recovered Property
When lost property is recovered and turned into the police department, every reasonable attempt will be made to identify and return the property to its rightful owner. In many instances property is recovered but never reunited with its owner because there was never a report filed. If you have an item that you have lost or had stolen in Evanston, your first action should be to file a police report.
Even if you have not filed a report, you can still check with the Property Bureau during the Public Operating Hours to see if an item has been turned in. You can contact the Bureau at 847-866-5029. Gun Buyback Program
The Gun Buyback Program is an opportunity for Evanston residents to turn in a functioning firearm to the Evanston Police, and in turn, receive $100. Call 311 or the Evanston Police Department non-emergency line at 847-866-5000. A police officer will pick up the unwanted firearm at the resident's address and present the resident with a voucher that can be exchanged for $100 at the City Collector’s Office located in the Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave.
Please do not bring a firearm to the police department without approval from an EPD supervisor.
