Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest of Evanston Man with a Ghost Gun
EVANSTON, IL - On April 25, 2022, at approximately 1:50 p.m. an Evanston Police Traffic Sergeant was on patrol in the area Harrison St. and Crawford Ave. The Sergeant observed a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt with no front license plate traveling south on Crawford Ave. at 53 mph in a posted 35 mph zone. The Sergeant stopped the Cobalt at Crawford Ave. and Church St.
The Sergeant approached and made contact with the driver. As the Sergeant approached, the driver was closing the Cobalt's glovebox. The driver, Sideny Akinde, was slow to respond when the Sergeant made contact with him. When Akinde did speak to the Sergeant he admitted that he did not have a driver's license. Akinde also made a statement creating suspicion he may have placed a gun in the glovebox.
Akinde exited the vehicle and was secured. The Sergeant then searched the glovebox, where he discovered an unassembled semi-automatic 9mm handgun, complete with the frame, the slide, and a loaded extended magazine.
Further investigation revealed the gun did not have a serial number, commonly referred to a "ghost gun". Akinde did not have a FOID card or a Concealed Carry License. The Cobalt was towed from the scene.
The Cook County State's Attorney's Office reviewed the case and approved a felony charge for Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Akinde was also charged with two misdemeanors and was issued several traffic citations. Click here for a photograph of the recovered weapon.
