Ramadan in United States will begin on the evening of Saturday April 2 and ends on the evening of Monday May 2. Ramadan is a month of fasting during daylight hours which allows adult Muslims to devote themselves to their faith and come closer to God. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which form the basis of how Muslims live their lives. The right greeting for Ramadan is Ramadan Mubarak! It means "Have a Blessed Ramadan!"
Read all about it: Check out our Ramadan Booklist for kids!
Ramadan crafts. Time to decorate for the holiday! Since the timing of Ramadan is determined by the moon, this gorgeous moon and stars craft makes a wonderful decoration for Ramadan!
Buy Dates! Iftar is the evening meal that breaks the daily fast and often includes a gathering of family and friends. Traditionally three dates are eaten first. If you have Muslim friends, it is kind to buy them sweet and delicious dates (available locally at Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe's, Valli Produce and of course Pita Inn Market).
Understanding Iftar. Ramadan is an intense period of fasting, charity, and self-examination. However, breaking the fast every night is a great joy especially in the company of friends, so Ramadan is also a month of evening get togethers. The last evening of Ramadan is Eid al Fitr, the grand celebration of the end of Ramadan.
Learning about money is a practical math project for kids! First, start with our Money Smart Week booklist. There are books for parents in this list, too. But here's some advice from US News and World Report if you want a quicker read.
Then check out these great preschool games using coins and bills; everyone can get in on the fun!
Did you know Evanston parks are often named for amazing local women? We hold our The Young and the Restless program at Cornelia Lunt Park, just east of the library, near the lakefront. Above is a picture of the formidable and accomplished Miss Lunt, called The First Lady of Evanston back in the day and daughter of Orrington Lunt (the bust in the top left of the photo) who found and bought the land for Northwestern University, around which the town grew. Find out more about her and other ground-breaking Evanston women! Thanks to the Evanston Roundtable for some great historical reporting.
We also have a great Women's History Month Booklist with stories of amazing women all over the world!
