Winter warriors: Evanston Public Works recognized for snow clearing excellence
Our dedicated Public Works Agency has been recognized by the American Public Works Association (APWA) for their outstanding work to keep public ways safe during winter storms. Evanston is one of only five cities nationwide to receive the 2022 Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Award!
Quick facts: Evanston Public Works crews are responsible for clearing 190 lane miles of street during winter weather events. Up to 45 staff members are on duty per shift, working around the clock, if necessary.
Speaking of snow: Crews are currently out clearing streets during today's snowfall. Please travel carefully this evening and remember to clear your sidewalks of ice and snow so that others can travel safely, too.
COVID-19 Update
Cases: Evanston reported 122 new confirmed COVID-19 cases over the last seven days, compared to 184 for the week prior. The current seven-day moving average of daily confirmed cases is 17.43. To date, Evanston has had 10,873 total confirmed cases, and 143 residents have died of illness or complications related to COVID-19.
Positivity rate: The City’s seven-day moving average positivity rate is 0.96 percent, compared to 1.84 percent for the week prior.
Hospitalizations: Local COVID-19 hospitalizations have decreased by 78.2 percent over the last 30 days.

An update on mask and vaccine mandates
In alignment with the State of Illinois and the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH), the Evanston Health and Human Services Department (EHHS) anticipates that if leading COVID-19 metrics continue to improve through February, the City of Evanston vaccination (.pdf) and masking (.pdf) orders can be lifted consistent with Governor Pritzker’s time frame, anticipated to be Monday, Feb. 28.
The metrics EHHS is monitoring related to mask and vaccine mandates include:
- Sustained improvement in hospital and ICU bed availability with decreased admissions for COVID-19
- Decreased case rates to a moderate level per CDC criteria (10-49.99 cases/100,000 population) for a sustained period
- Decreased case positivity rate to a moderate level per CDC criteria (5-7.99 percent) for a sustained period
EHHS will continue to monitor all measures that will be considered in the decision-making process and will provide an update next week. Not all metrics need to be at target to modify the current mitigations, but substantial progress must be observed.
After February 28, even with a change in local mitigations, masks will continue to be required where mandated by the state and federal government, such as on public transit and in high-risk settings, including healthcare facilities and congregate care.
Mask and vaccination mandates are still in effect at this time: Until mitigations are modified, the Evanston Health & Human Services Department continues to mandate universal masking in indoor public places and vaccination requirements for covered entities as part of a layered strategy to control the spread of the virus.
Masks are still required in schools at this time: The State of Illinois continues to mandate masks in all public and private Pre-K-12 schools that are not part of a pending lawsuit.
