This upcoming week the Library will host two special health and wellness programs geared towards addressing issues faced by the Black community and communities of color.
The Flavor of Defeat: How Big Tobacco is Still Winning and What We Can Do About It: After the sweeping defeats Big Tobacco faced in the 1990s, the industry has adapted its tactics to continue targeting youth and communities of color to initiate smoking to ensure a new generation of lifelong customers. Local anti-tobacco advocates will share results of a recent study demonstrating how these national trends are playing out in Evanston. Conversation will follow. Wed., Feb. 16, 7 p.m. Register.
Antiracist Birthwork and Antiracist Outcomes: Join us for an evening with Chicago Volunteer Doulas, Inc., a birth justice organization providing provides comprehensive doula care throughout the Chicagoland community, including birth and postpartum programs and the first-of-its-kind peer doula program at Logan Correctional Facility. The organization's executive director will discuss racial disparities in birth outcomes and how we can help dismantle the systems that oppress and harm Black mothers and mothers of color. Thur., Feb. 17, 6 p.m. Register.
The Library's programming in honor of Black History Month continues all month long and highlights the contributions of Black Americans past and present.
