Dear Friends,
Harbert Park, which lies along the North Shore Channel between Main and Dempster Streets, is currently named in honor of the late Elizabeth Boynton Harbert, an author, women’s suffrage advocate, and founder of the Woman’s Club of Evanston.
Please join me for a rededication ceremony for Harbert Park (located at the shelter on McDaniel Avenue between Greenleaf and Crain Streets), which will now be named "Harbert Payne Park," this Saturday, Sept. 18 at 3 p.m.
Betty J. Payne lived near Harbert Park for more than 40 years where she organized and led a neighborhood group named Canal Park Neighbors. During that time, Betty held regular meetings for the neighbors to address their needs for services, such as street paving, policing, park renovation and upkeep, and alley paving.
Betty also mobilized a neighborhood watch program, “noise neighbors,” and led the group in marches in the Evanston Fourth of July Parade and in the Canal Park neighborhood to heighten the vigilance of the community against crime.
Continuing her dedication to the City of Evanston, Betty served as the Evanston Township’s Treasurer for two consecutive terms. Additionally, her love for animals inspired her to become a generous supporter of the Humane Society and philanthropist to many notable causes, including creating and funding the Stanton Payne Westinghouse Vocational High School Scholarship Program.
