EVANSTON, IL - The Evanston Public Library is kicking off a suite of activities to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which takes place from September 15 to October 15.
Hispanics have a significant presence in our local community. Approximately 12% of Evanston residents identify as Hispanic or Latino/a, and 20% of ETHS’ Class of 2025 is Latino/a.
But the vibrant cultures, communities, and individuals that fall into this group are all too often underappreciated and stereotyped. In fact, 60% of American Hispanics report experiencing discrimination, and 4 out of 5 young Latinos/as say their family or friends have been targeted because of their identity.
This Hispanic Heritage Month, the Library is committed to making sure Hispanics in Evanston are seen, heard and valued. In the spirit of this, a number of events centered around the Hispanic experience have been planned for the upcoming days:
- Learn a lot of interesting and eye-opening facts about U.S. Hispanics with the Celebrating Mi Gente display, located at the Robert Crown Library until October 15.
- Check out our HHM Scavenger Hunt/Búsqueda de Tesoros, an indoor mini scavenger hunt featuring the contributions and achievements of Latinos/as in the US. Available at the Main Library (Orrington Ave.) and at the Crown Branch.
- Register to join us again at the Crown Branch for craft-making, refreshments and music at Crea tu Propio Collar (event in Spanish) on September 16 and 30 at 6:30 pm.
- On Friday, September 17 at 6 pm, join us at Washington Elementary School’s outdoor space for Danza Azteca: Mexico’s Ancient Culture and Living Tradition and experience the heritage and culture of the Indigenous tradition of Flor y Canto of ancient Mexico with the Xochitl-Quetzal Dance Troupe.
- On Friday, October 1st at 6 pm, a Noche de Juegos/game night will be held in the Robert Crown Programming Room to play Loteria and Hispanic Jeopardy.
- On Saturday, September 25, join us for Cuentacuentos en Español, a storytime event for children.
- And check out our HHM book displays! Go to the Main Library’s KIDS department to find some old favorites or visit the Crown Branch for a selection of books focused on Latinidad and the history, culture, and politics of Hispanics in the US.
Look out for other related events, too. Join us for Salud Mental es Esencial, a special presentation en Español as part of the Mental Health is Essential programming on Thursday, September 23. Join us at out our En Pantalla: México program on Thursday, October 7 to discuss the documentary “Los Tigres del Norte en la Prision de Folsom.” (event in Spanish)
For almost 150 years, the Library has provided educational, culturally-rich resources for all residents, helped children prepare for school through the joys of reading and learning, celebrated Evanston’s diversity, and helped residents find information they seek. The Library is more than a building of books; it is a place to meet, connect, learn and explore. To learn more, visit www.epl.org.
