Evanston Police Charge an Offender in September 4 Homicide
EVANSTON, IL - On September 4, 2021, at 10:27 p.m. Evanston Police responded to the 1700 block of Dodge Avenue for a 911 call of a person shot inside a residence. Officers arrived and discovered the victim, Stanley Butler III, inside the residence. The victim had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The Evanston Fire Department responded and treated the victim, but he died on scene from his injuries. No one else was injured. The initial investigation revealed that multiple offenders entered the victim's residence, shot the victim, and then fled.
A Saturn Vue was observed leaving the scene of the homicide westbound on Church Street by responding officers. Officers attempted to pull over the vehicle after observing a traffic violation. When the authorities tried to stop the Saturn, it fled. Officers lost sight of the Saturn after a brief pursuit.
A short time later, officers located the Saturn in the 5000 block of Dempster Street in Skokie, IL, the Skokie Swift Station. Officers were able to stop the vehicle and detain Alejandro Lopez, the sole occupant and driver. Officers discovered two firearms and gloves in the passenger seat in plain sight.
Detectives investigated and were able to establish that Lopez was one of the offenders. After working cooperatively with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, detectives charged Lopez in connection with Butler's murder.
The Evanston Police Detective Bureau and North Regional Major Crimes Task Force are continuing the investigation. The investigation indicates there are additional offenders at large. Lopez is the only offender in custody.
