The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook overnight for parts of northeast Illinois, including Evanston.
The threat of severe weather is primarily between the hours of midnight and 5 a.m., but could arrive as early as 11 p.m. Weather hazards include the potential for significant wind gusts (75+ miles per hour), downed trees, limbs and powerlines, and localized areas of torrential downpours and flooding.
What you can do:
-
Listen for the emergency sirens. The City’s outdoor emergency sirens will sound in the event of a severe weather emergency. If the sirens sound, seek shelter indoors away from windows and glass.
-
Report power outages. Check ComEd’s Outage Map for power outages in your area. Report any outages online or by calling 1-800-EDISON-1. In the event of a downed power line, call ComEd immediately.
-
Report downed trees, flooding and other non-emergency issues to 311. Call or text 847-448-4311 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. or submit a service request online at cityofevanston.org/311 any time. (Please note: 311 will open early on Thursday, July 29 at 6 a.m. in anticipation of potential increased call volume.)
-
Dial 911 to report an emergency. Always call 911 to report an immediate threat to life or safety.
-
Secure loose outdoor items ahead of time. Patio furniture, sports equipment, trash cans and other items can become dangerous in high winds. Before a storm hits, bring these items indoors, if possible, or make sure they are secure if outdoors.
ComEd is adjusting staffing levels and will continue to monitor the weather throughout the event. Evanston 311 is also preparing to have additional staff on hand, as needed.
Any additional updates will be provided via this e-newsletter, Facebook, Twitter, and the City's website.
