To celebrate national hot dog day this week, we've got some frank book suggestions for you.
1. Hot Doug's: The Book by Doug Sohn (print): Sohn takes the reader on a fun, irreverent trip through the history of hot dogs, his restaurant, and the many patrons -- both famous and average Joe -- who have declared Sohn the king of dogs.
2. Haute Dogs: Recipes for Delicious Hot Dogs, Buns, and Condiments by Russell Van Kraayenberg (print): Hot dogs get a fresh and tasty twist, with recipes inspired by everything from south-of-the-border BBQ to Japanese fusion to modern food-cart cuisine.
3. Famous Nathan: a family saga of Coney Island, the American dream, and the search for the perfect hot dog by Lloyd Handwerker (print): Founded in 1916, Famous Nathan's based its reputation on hard work, quality ingredients, and affordable prices. This book offers a portrait not just of a man and a family, but the changing face of a nation through a century of promise and progress.
In 2018, the Library launched the Memory Cafe, a program designed to connect and support patrons living on the memory loss spectrum and their care partners. Nearly three years later, the group has grown into a wonderful community that's continued meeting virtually throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, when many seniors were more isolated than ever.
The Memory Cafe is continuing to bring people together in 2021. Read all about the future of the group here.
The Evanston Care Network is a free, easy to use online hub that connects people to food, shelter, mental health care, housing, rental assistance and childcare resources—and so much more. And it's searchable in more than 100 languages.
Formed in partnership between the Library, the City of Evanston, Amita St. Francis and the Evanston Community Foundation, the Evanston Care Network was launched last year and played a huge role in the city's efforts to support community members during the pandemic. And it's continuing to serve Evanston residents and their diverse needs to this day. Visit the Evanston Care Network as well as our comprehensive Community Organization Directory here.
