August is National Black Business Month! Starting Monday, August 9, join Evanston Public Library as we highlight and support local Black owned businesses in the community! Visit a minimum of five participating Black-owned businesses with our punch card and make a purchase or answer a trivia question to enter the raffle. Raffle winners select a $50 gift certificate to one of the businesses! Punch cards available at the Main Library (847-448-8630) or the Robert Crown Branch library (847-448-8101).
Of course, we also recommend celebrating Black Business Month with books!
Before school starts on August 25, review our Summer Vacation booklist and Great Summer Vacation movies! You can also check out some eBooks and eAudiobooks for your trip. In fact, Hoopla has just announced more "Bonus Borrows" that don't count against your monthly totals and a new feature for craft lovers called "Craftsy." Find out more about our online libraries here. Or pick out a Playaway to keep kids entertained in the car, on the plane, or on the porch!

In the Northern Hemisphere, August 1 is Lammas (also known as Lughnasadh or Loaf Mass Day), the day marking the midpoint between Summer Solstice and the Autumn Equinox. Lammas is celebrated by ancient Celts, certain Christian denominations, and modern nature lovers. It is the first of three annual autumn harvest celebrations in the neopagan tradition.
How to celebrate? Buy bread at one of Evanston's bakeries or bake bread together, take a nature walk that focuses on gratitude, give back to the earth (by feeding the birds, planting natives for bees, or picking up trash), or give to other people by donating to an Evanston food pantry.
Great locations for your grateful-for-nature walk in Evanston: the lakefront, the Ladd Arboretum, and Lovelace Park walking path. Or see a living prairie together at Middlefork Savanna in Lake Forest, a 25-acre parcel of which is considered the highest quality tallgrass savanna of its kind in the nation!
