Tailgating and Parking at Canal Shores
A proposed agreement between Canal Shores and Northwestern University for the operation of tailgating and parking for NU football games is expected to go to the City Council for approval on July 12. Under the agreement, Holes 1, 2, 3 (south of the green), 11 and 12 are to be reserved for tailgating. Hole 3 (north of the green) and Holes 14 and 15 are to be reserved for parking only.
In a typical year, golf accounts for 60 to 65 percent of Canal Shores revenues. Fundraising and events account for another 20 to 25 percent. The projected revenue from football tailgating and parking will fill the gap and make sure Canal Shores can cover its basic operations and provide for some modest investment in the course.
A high priority is sprinkler repair. Fifty percent of the sprinkler heads on the course are not functioning. This means that much of Canal Shores staff time must be spent hand watering the greens. Another priority is purchasing plants to help fill in the areas where volunteers have removed large quantities of invasive trees and plants. Also on the list is a “wash station” for equipment used on the course and an increase to the fund for youth golf scholarships.
Friday Work Sessions at Harley Clarke Garden
Visitors to the Lighthouse Beach area will have noticed the installation of a native flower garden near the walkway to the beach. This is a project of Jens Jensen Gardens in Evanston, a local nonprofit working to restore and maintain the Jens Jensen gardens and landscape around Harley Clarke.
Volunteers are warmly welcomed every Friday afternoon from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, contact Charles Smith at friendofoaks@aol.com or 847-274-7842.
