City Offers ‘Rain Alerts’ to Encourage Community Members to Reduce Water Usage and Help Prevent Flooding During Intense Precipitation Events

EVANSTON, IL - Evanston community members can sign up for convenient text message or email notifications to help them reduce the risk of basement and street flooding during heavy rain events. 

City of Evanston “Rain Alerts” will notify subscribers when intense rain is in the forecast for Evanston – defined as more than one inch of rain in a one-hour period. In a typical year, Evanston experiences approximately two to three rain events of this intensity, on average.

Community members can subscribe by visiting cityofevanston.org/rain or by texting COE RAIN to 468311.

Subscribers will be reminded to take action to reduce water usage that is not time critical, such as delaying laundry, limiting showers and baths, and postponing washing dishes. Reducing household water usage before and during heavy rain events allows sewers to better handle an increased volume of water.
