EVANSTON, IL - The Evanston Public Library will hold a two-part discussion on the “Legacy of School Segregation in Evanston,” where Evanston youth will help facilitate conversations about Evanston’s past experiences with institutional racism and how to chart paths for the future of local education.
The first night of the event, “Investigating Our History From Different Perspectives,” will take place on Thursday, May 13 at 7 pm. The evening will be hosted by Shorefront Legacy Center Founder Dino Robinson, Mary Barr, author of Friends Disappear: The Battle for Racial Equality in Evanston, and Evanston youth organizers. This discussion will focus on how the historical backdrop of school segregation affects the experiences of students today.
The second night of the event, “Visions for a Community School in the 5th Ward,” will take place on Thursday, May 20 at 7 pm. D65 Manager of Student Assignment Sarita Smith, STEM School Evanston Founder Henry Wilkins II, and EPL Executive Director Karen Danczak Lyons will engage in a panel discussion about future plans for creating a new educational experience in the 5th Ward.
“I look forward to being part of this discussion as we explore possibilities for a Fifth Ward library. The co-location of public libraries within schools and other facilities can provide wonderful ease of access for students and families alike,” said Karen Danczak Lyons.
Community members are invited to ask questions and share their thoughts and experiences at both of these interactive events. Register online or by calling (847) 448-8630.
For almost 150 years, the Library has provided educational, culturally-rich resources for all residents, helped children prepare for school through the joys of reading and learning, celebrated Evanston’s diversity, and helped residents find information they seek. The Library is more than a building of books; it is a place to meet, connect, learn and explore. To learn more, visit www.epl.org.
