EVANSTON, IL - Evanston’s Public Works Agency continues its all-hands-on-deck response following 18 inches of snow accumulation – one of the highest totals in the Chicago area.
Operations update
Crews are currently working around the clock in 12-hour shifts to clear streets, City parking lots, and park pathways. Additional City staff, including recycling collection personnel, have been redeployed to assist with snow clearing and plowing efforts. Due to the enormous amount of snow, it’s anticipated that cleanup efforts will continue throughout this week.
As of 3 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16:
- Main thoroughfares have been substantially cleared. Plows will continue to push back snow on these streets during tonight’s Snow Route Parking Ban (11 p.m. to 6 a.m.)
- Plows are currently focusing on clearing residential streets. Snow Emergency even/odd parking restrictions remain in effect Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Crews have begun clearing snow from City-owned parking lots, park pathways and sidewalks adjacent to City buildings. These efforts are expected to continue throughout the week.
- Trash and recycling collections continue to be impacted. Tuesday and Wednesday collections have been postponed.
Free off-street parking is available in the City’s three downtown garages, AMITA Health St. Francis Hospital’s parking garage, and at select City parking lots through Friday.
How residents can help
Cleaning up after such a significant snow event requires a communitywide effort. Here's how residents can help:
- Follow posted parking restrictions. Move your car off the street, if possible.
- Shovel your sidewalk, including crosswalks and accessibility ramps. Paths should be at least 36 inches wide so that all community members can travel safely.
- Remove snow from your steps and driveway to provide a safe path for essential workers, such as Post Office carriers and delivery drivers.
- Adopt a fire hydrant. Clear the area around fire hydrants to allow first responders to access them in the event of an emergency.
- Clear snow from around trash and recycling containers.
- Help your neighbors. The Snow Shoveling Assistance Program connects senior and disabled residents with volunteers who are willing to provide snow shoveling services.
The City of Evanston thanks residents for their assistance and cooperation.
