February is Black History Month. And after February, there's more to learn all year long! Celebrate with your kids using excellent books and movies from Evanston Public Library.
In this Black History Month video, Tracy Olasimbo of EPL reads Exquisite: The Poetry and Life of Gwendolyn Brooks, illustrated by Evanstonian Cozbi Cabrera. Also, employees Chijioke Williams and Rolinda Stevenson read poetry by Maya Angelou and Gwendolyn Brooks.

Black Cinema project: Stop by the Main Library or Robert Crown Branch Library to check out a movie celebrating Black cinema. Along with it, you can pick up a bucket of popcorn (while supplies last), discussion questions, and suggestions for what to watch next. Each bucket also has a Black inventor bingo card. The more bingo cards you collect the more chances you have to win during one of our upcoming bingo events.

 Mardi Gras, also called Fat Tuesday, is February 16! Why do some people make pancakes and other baked goods (Paczki!) on Fat Tuesday? In Catholic religious tradition, Fat Tuesday is for using up your eggs, butter, and milk in a delicious way to get ready for Lent, starting on Wednesday. Many people who simply enjoy a good party celebrate Mardi Gras!
- Have your kids cook for Mardi Gras! Kids learn how to make Dutch Baby Pancakes with Miss Kim in this terrific how to video.
- Make a Mardi Gras hat or mask to wear. Wondering how to celebrate? Dine on pancakes for dinner or create a home parade! Decorate your table or yourself in purple, green, and yellow, the Mardi Gras colors since 1892.

Toothpaste Giveaway: Stephens Dentistry in Evanston has generously provided us with tubes of toothpaste to give away for Children's Dental Health Month. Come to the Main Library or Robert Crown Branch Library to get your toothpaste plus some fun American Dental Association kids activity sheets, starting February 15th and continuing while supplies last!

Time for a popsicle stick catapult! All you need are some popsicle/craft sticks, rubber bands, glue, and a bottle cap. And of course, something small (and soft) for the firing power, like marshmallows or pom poms. Happy launching!
- In the spirit of Fat Tuesday, here is a PBS Kids activity showing how to make homemade butter! You need heavy whipping cream, a jar with a lid and seal, and a couple other household items. After you make the butter, you can talk with your kids about the reactions that occur for the liquid to produce a solid.
