Evanston Police Continue to Investigate January 9th Howard Street Shooting
EVANSTON, IL - The Evanston Police Department continues to investigate the tragic shooting incident that occurred at two area businesses on Saturday, January 9. The incidents began at approximately 5:38 pm, when Evanston police officers responded to the CVS at 101 Asbury, for calls of shots fired within the store. Upon arrival at CVS, officers learned that the offender had left the location and had entered IHOP located at 100 Asbury. Officers relocated to IHOP and were advised that a woman had been shot inside the location, and that the offender had left the location heading south on Howard Street. A witness pointed out the offender to officers as he fled while armed. A chase ensued as officers attempted to stop the subject and gun shots were exchanged. The offender later identified as Jason O. Nightengale of Chicago, was later pronounced deceased at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.
Evanston detectives in conjunction with NORTAF(North Regional Major Crimes Task Force) detectives, continue to investigate the shooting. At this time we are still uncertain as to what motivated Jason Nightengale to commit these heinous crimes.
The female victim that was shot inside the IHOP, continues to fight for her life and is in critical condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head Saturday evening.
