EVANSTON, IL - Today Evanston Mayor Stephen Hagerty issued the following statement regarding the breach of the U.S. Capitol:
"I add my voice to President-elect Biden’s in condemning in the strongest terms possible the brazen attack taking place on our democratic republic. I call on President Trump to fulfill his sworn oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States by immediately demanding the removal and arrest of the mob roaming the hallowed corridors of the U.S. Capitol.
I commend the Capitol Police who are valiantly fulfilling their oaths in defending our duly elected representatives – Democrats and Republicans – and the public servants who work tirelessly each day on the real, challenging issues that touch all our lives. These representatives, public servants, and the journalists who cover them are parents, sons, daughters, and neighbors forced today to seek refuge in the face of mob violence. Many of them were in the Capitol today to certify what should be considered the crowning glory of our democracy – a fairly elected leader with a peaceful transfer of power.
Generations of people have come to the United States since its founding to seek asylum from brutal governments whose grip on power stems from the type of violent coup attempted today. To witness this in the United States, instigated by the President, is unacceptable. All people must come together to reaffirm the principles of a stable democracy.
As the President-elect stated earlier, our American democracy is a wonder, but it is also fragile. All that tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent. I will not remain silent, and I call on my fellow Evanstonians to raise their voices in affirming their belief in and commitment to a nation governed by the rule of law."
