EVANSTON, IL - Evanston Mayor Stephen Hagerty has awarded nine Evanston organizations with the 2020 Mayor’s Award for the Arts, recognizing their significant contributions to the community through art.
The awards were presented at the annual “A Bright Night for the Arts” event hosted by the Evanston Arts Council on Thursday, November 19, which was conducted virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (View a recording of the event and photos of the awarded projects.)
ETHS Men’s Basketball Team, Evanston Art Center and Dawes Elementary School
The Evanston Township High School (ETHS) Men’s Basketball Team, Evanston Art Center and Dawes Elementary School were awarded for their art projects that made timely statements: Black Lives Matter and Strength In Diversity.
Kids Create Change, Art Makers Outpost, Evanston Made, Open Studio Project, Young Evanston Artists (YEA!) and Art Encounter
These six organizations were awarded for delivering more than 1,500 art kits to Evanston children, providing them with a creative outlet while staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mayor Hagerty also honored Beth Adler for her leadership and support for Evanston's arts community while serving as chair of the Evanston Arts Council.
“Despite the pandemic, Evanston’s vibrant arts community has persevered to share works of hope, healing and inspiration,” Mayor Hagerty said. “Art has shined brightest during the darkest periods in history, and 2020 is no different. I applaud Evanston artists and organizations for using their talent and creativity to bring our community closer together during this difficult year.”
In addition to the Mayor's Award for the Arts presentation, the Bright Night for the Arts event included a virtuoso live violin performance by 15-year-old Esme Arias-Kim, and a video of the outpouring of gifts of art provided by Evanston artists over the past few months.
