![Central Street Bridge Project - Stage 1](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/ILEVANSTON/2020/11/3835020/3272598/centralstreetbridgeproject_crop.jpg) In coordination with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the City of Evanston is beginning the Central Street Bridge Replacement Project.
The scope of the project includes removal, replacement and widening of the existing bridge structure on Central Street at the North Shore Channel. The project is part of the City’s continuous program to improve the roadway system throughout the community and is funded by both federal and local funds.
The new bridge will be constructed from the bottom up, including pile foundations, piers, columns, abutments, wing walls, and a wider bridge deck accommodating bicycles, pedestrians and golf carts. New street lighting will be installed within the project limits, and the existing crosswalk at Bryant Avenue will be upgraded.
Project Schedule
The contractor will begin preparation the week of November 9 by removing trees and clearing the channel embankment area on the north and south side of the bridge. The proposed work for 2020 includes setting up the staging area and installing sheet piling along the access drive for Fire Station #3. The bridge will be constructed in two stages; the scope of work with the anticipated schedule for each stage is as follows:
Stage 1: Main construction will start in February 2021 with demolition of the south half of the existing bridge. Two-way traffic will be maintained on the existing north half of the bridge during this stage. The south half of the new bridge will be completed by September 2021.
Stage 2: In fall 2021, the contractor will begin with demolition of the existing north half of the bridge. During construction of the new northern portion, two-way traffic will be maintained on the newly constructed south half of the bridge. Once the north section is complete, Central Street will be resurfaced on the east and west sides of the bridge. The entire project, including restoration and landscaping, is expected to be complete by October 2022.
During construction, one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on Central Street, and access to Fire Station #3, Evanston Hospital and Canal Shores Golf Course will be available at all times. Construction activities will create some inconveniences for the adjacent businesses and residents, but the City will attempt to minimize these issues. Construction zone “No Parking Any Time” will be in effect on the bridge for the duration of the bridge replacement project.

The contractor for this project is Copenhaver Construction Inc., located at 75 Koppie Dr., Gilberts, IL 60103.
