City Receives $3.5 Million STP Grant to Support Green Bay Road Improvement Project
EVANSTON, IL - The City of Evanston has received $3.5 million in grant funds from the North Shore Council of Mayors for the engineering and construction phases of the Green Bay Road Corridor Improvements project. The limits of the Green Bay Road Corridor Improvements Project are from McCormick Boulevard to Isabella Street to the north, and along Central Street from Prairie Avenue to Poplar/Broadway Avenue. The purpose of the project is to improve safety for all users, including pedestrians, cars, buses and all modes of transportation.
The City's Public Works Agency and Engineering staff applied for and received the Surface Transportation Program (STP) Local grant funds from the North Shore Council of Mayors through a call for projects. These STP Local funds are federal funds administered by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and the Illinois Department of Transportation. The estimated total construction cost for the project is $5 million, with the grant covering 70 percent of the project cost.
The scope of the project includes the reconstruction of intersection ramps to meet ADA requirements and modernization of traffic signals at Lincoln Street, Central Street, and Livingston Street. Additional work includes street light upgrades to current City standards, intersection improvements, as well as streetscape and sidewalk improvements. Pavement rehabilitation will include roadway patching as needed and resurfacing the entire length of the Green Bay Road Corridor within the project limits.
This project is currently in Phase 1 - Engineering Study, with anticipated completion by the end of 2020. The design phase of the project, including construction plans, will begin in 2021.
