City to Contract Sewer Root Treatment Beginning September 29
Every year, the City contracts work to maintain a portion of its public combined sewer main system through root treatment. This year, approximately 22,000 feet of combined sewer mains will be treated primarily in the northern and eastern portion of the city. The work is scheduled to take place between September 29 and November 20, weather permitting.
The treatment process involves applying foaming herbicide in the mains to prevent the growth of tree roots in sewers. The purpose of the application is to kill the root growth in the lines and to inhibit re-growth, without permanently damaging the vegetation producing the roots. The chemical herbicide used is registered with and approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
